Pregnancy and medication

Many medications can affect your baby so always consult with your doctor before starting or continuing any medication during pregnancy.

Make sure you always mention that you're pregnant when you are visiting a health professional, for instance your doctor, dentist, herbalist or chemist; even if you're going to get natural remedies and even if it’s very early on in your pregnancy.

Never forget to say you’re pregnant
You should never start any type of treatment, especially one that involves taking medicines, during your pregnancy without talking to your GP or LMC about it.

Same applies if you’re already on medication, for example for asthma, allergies or depression. Consult with your doctor as soon as you know you’re pregnant. And never stop taking medication without talking to your doctor first.

Be careful with medication while breastfeeding
And all of this applies when you’re breastfeeding too; always tell your health care provider that you are breastfeeding. A lot of medications, including natural medicines, pass into the breast milk.
