The only shopping list you need

What do we really need? You’re not alone in asking that question. Read on to find out the answer.

There are no limits when it comes to shopping for your baby. So some guidance can definitely come in handy. Here’s what we suggest:

• 6 singlets
• 4 stretch ‘n’ grows
• 2 sets of pyjamas
• 2-3 tops and/or jackets. Make sure they’re long to keep baby’s back warm.
• 2 long-sleeved T-shirts
• 6 pairs of socks – not too tight
• 4 blankets to wrap baby in
• 1 hat

• Nappies - start with Treasures Ultra Newborn which fit boys and girls. The average baby is in this size for around six weeks so you could stokpile about eight packs of 30.
• 10 cloth nappies to use as burp cloths and for resting baby’s head on
• sheets and blankets
• 1 cotton bath sheet
• cot or bassinet
• pram or buggy
• baby changing table
• changing mat
• baby bath
• disposable wipes
• small washbasin or a bowl to stand beside baby’s changing table, if you don’t have access to running water
• cream for your baby’s nappy area
• baby thermometer
• high chair (although you won’t need this for awhile!)
• a front pack or sling
• nappy bag
• car seat (you can hire these from Plunket)

Spring or summer babies:
• 2 short-sleeved T-shirts
• loose trousers or leggings in thin material
• sun hat
• 1 thin cap

Autumn or winter babies:
• fleece suit or sleeping bag
• woolly hat
• mittens and warm socks

You don’t have to buy all of this new. Ask around. Maybe you can borrow stuff or buy second-hand - a better option for the environment and your budget.
