What we do for a better tomorrow

Sustainability is about holistic perspective. For us, it is important to create a long-term balance between the needs of people and the environment. That is our starting point.

For the good of your child – both today and tomorrow

Over the years we have succeeded in making our diapers thinner, and today we have reduced the weight by almost a fifth.* A thinner diaper gives your baby more freedom of movement. A lighter product is also better for the environment. Then fewer resources are used, the amount of waste is minimized and transport becomes more efficient.

These are just a few examples of how we have managed to improve our diapers and make life a little better for you, your baby and our planet.

* We have reduced product weight by 19% since 2008, which reduces waste and unnecessary resource consumption. The changes in product weight are average values based on life cycle assessments for baby products.

The importance of sustainability

It goes without saying that there is still much to do to contribute to a reduced climate impact. These are just some of the things we do.

  • Ongoing work for even more energy-efficient production
  • Packaging with a greater amount of renewable and recycled material
  • Smart product design that benefits babies, parents and the environment
  • Raw materials from more sustainable sources
  • No toxic or unnecessary chemicals
  • Share our knowledge about parenting, health and hygiene
  • Reduce the amount of waste
  • Actively provide parents with support that makes their parenting easier

We have been working on sustainability for a long time

  • We have reduced our carbon footprint by 16% for pant diapers and 25% for open diapers since 2008*
  • Our diaper packaging now consists of 60% recycled plastic. By using recycled plastic, we reduce unnecessary waste, save resources and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
  • 100% of the electricity in our factories comes from renewable sources such as sun, wind, water and biomass. That electricity produces a lower carbon footprint than electricity from non-renewable sources such as oil, natural gas and coal. We buy the electricity we use in our factories externally. Renewable electricity is purchased with certificates for guarantees of origin. These certificates are issued by external institutes, such as the European Electricity Certification System (EECS), which guarantee a credible system. Through this work, we support the development of renewable electricity in all markets.
  • We have reduced product weight by 19% since 2008, which reduces the amount of waste and the unnecessary use of resources**
  • 100% of the wood pulp used in our diapers has the FSC® Chain of Custody certification
  • In 2022, we will launch a new climate-smart product - Libero Touch hybrid diaper. Unlike a regular nappy, this one has two parts – a washable, reusable textile pant and a disposable absorbent pad. This means that you use and throw away less material. In addition, the number of transports of material is reduced. Overall, the Libero Touch Hybrid has a 35% lower climate impact compared to a regular diaper from Libero.

What do we mean by climate impact?

When we talk about climate impact, we mean the total amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of activities linked to the production, use and waste management of our products.

We carry out life cycle assessments on an ongoing basis, which we use to calculate our climate impact. The results so far show that our efforts have paid off.

But we are not content with that. We have many thoughts and ideas about how to further reduce our climate impact. It is a tough challenge ahead of us, but we are sure that together we can make a difference. So that our children will be able to grow up on an earth that is healthy tomorrow too.

Libero is part of a larger family

Libero was founded in 1980 in Sweden, but several decades earlier we started investigating how we can offer the best and most gentle diapers for children in the Nordics. SCA has since changed its name to Essity.

Today, Libero is part of the large Essity family with many brands and products in many different categories. Essity's sustainability work includes all the products we produce. If you want to know more about our strategy and our goals and achievements, you can read more here
