Baby 11 weeks
For newborn babies, mouth reflexes and movements were essential for survival. And even today, the mouth is still central to babies, and stimulation in the mouth often gives them great pleasure. Sucking on the breast, bottle or dummy feels nice and cosy and helps them relax. Many babies now find and begin to suck on their own hands. If you put a toy in your baby's hand, they will probably suck on that too – everything has to go in the mouth and be explored there. This is not surprising at all, because sucking and tasting are an important part of a baby's exploration of the world!
Parent
How can you love someone so much? It's hard to understand when you're holding your little bundle of joy in your arms and your heart is pounding so hard. Tears of happiness are part and parcel of parenthood. But something else that often accompanies great love is worry. Infancy is a time when we are extra sensitive, extra open to all the feelings that are tumbling around and to all the dangers that could possibly find and threaten our little treasure. This can make the time as a new parent feel extra difficult for many, as worry takes a lot of energy and strength. All the responsibility and the completely new situation can create feelings of depression, sadness, worry and anxiety. So if your parental heart feels heavy, it is good to talk to someone about it. At the child health centre, there are many people who work with difficult feelings related to infancy, and help is also available at the health centre. Friends, partners and your own parents are also people who can often be a great support if they hear about what feels heavy and difficult.
