Baby 2 weeks
Newborn babies have a great need to be close to their parents and to feel their skin and smell. Skin-to-skin contact has many positive benefits for a small baby, including making the transition to the new world a little less dramatic. Breathing and heart rate actually become more stable with skin-to-skin contact. But parents also benefit from skin contact with their newborn baby, and it is a wonderful way to get to know your baby in peace and quiet. Try to take many moments each day when you just cuddle and enjoy each other's closeness – it is more important than all the practicalities around you during this first, shaky, emotional time together. You never need to be afraid of spoiling your baby with either closeness or food; on the contrary, your baby will be calmer and happier if they are allowed to eat as often as they want during the early days. Lying in a parent's arms and being fed is so much more than just nutrition – it creates security for the child in an otherwise completely new world.
Parent
The first period at home is usually filled with strong emotions in all directions, and it is common to feel everything, big and small, at the same time. Happiness and laughter can be mixed with anxiety, stress and depression. The transition to parenthood is so enormous that it simply takes all your energy to adapt to the situation and settle into everything that is new. Add to that a large dose of sleep deprivation! For those who have given birth, there is of course also the physical transition, which also takes a lot of energy. A body that may be aching, bleeding and undergoing hormonal changes often has a great need for rest. If there are two parents in the family, try to give each other a lot of emotional support during the first, shaky period as new parents. It may be wise to try to prioritise your own family's needs over the wishes of relatives and friends to meet the baby.
