Baby 4 weeks
A four-week-old little bundle is slowly getting used to its new surroundings and opening up a little more to the world around it. Its body is beginning to relax and its hands, which were previously clenched, are opening up. Food, sleep and closeness are still the most important things for a little newborn, but when the baby is alert and content, contact with a parent is often exciting. Being face to face with their parent is an important need at this stage. Babies want eye contact and to be able to listen to your sounds and follow your expressions. A little baby doesn't actually need much more stimulation than that right now.
Parent
You might think it's impossible to spend so much time sitting with a baby in your arms, but most people who have had children know that you can hardly get further than the sofa in the beginning. If you manage to put on a load of laundry or get in the shower, you've actually accomplished a lot. And that's enough! Because it's perfectly okay to just stay at home – every day and every evening. In fact, the more you do it, the better. Infants and new parents benefit greatly from the cosy, calm and quiet life of the first few weeks. And you – it's normal to feel emotionally unstable during the early days of parenthood, as the transition you're going through is enormous. If you feel down or anxious and tense, it's good to find someone to talk to about how you feel – there can be many emotions swirling around, and it's nice to hear that none of them are wrong or stupid. Some people thrive in the baby bubble that arises in the early days, but others feel uncomfortable in that environment and need more support from others to be able to enjoy life as a parent. So dare to tell others how you feel – even if it's not all sunshine and roses!
