First smile

Perhaps you have now experienced that first smile? That smile that is not just an innate reflex, but a wonderful smile, with warmth directed specifically at you. A two-month-old baby can often give a fairly conscious smile in response to eye contact. And once your child can show their feelings more clearly, it usually becomes a little easier to interpret both their needs and moods. Your baby will now also start to have slightly longer periods between naps – and even though much of their waking time is still spent eating, it will usually become clear that your baby's "social side" is taking off – that is, the side that involves intensely observing and getting to know their family.

The new life

Perhaps life is starting to settle into a routine and you feel at home in your new identity as a parent, or perhaps everyday life is still a little too chaotic as you juggle your responsibilities. It is different for everyone and can sometimes feel different from one day to the next. Some people experience this as a wonderful time because they are bonding with their child and starting to interact more with smiles, sounds and facial expressions. At the same time, you may feel that routines are often not in place and it can be exhausting not being able to plan your everyday life – especially for those whose babies have decided to only sleep for a few minutes at a time. So it's not unusual to feel a little like a failure as a parent when your child's needs and desires change... But because you are actually there, paying attention and responding to your child's needs, you are an excellent parent. Remember that!
